This ambitious project uses the best spaces of the old prison of Salamanca to create an exhibition centre. Some new architectonical elements have been introduced in order to house new facilities, services and uses. The historic roof has been renovated with new materials matching the restored old façades finishings. The central building is the core of the exhibition space. The building defines the character of the old prison. The tour visiting exhibitions leads off through the side gallery. In the centre of the main body is the large exhibition hall, double the height of the original gallery of cells and the most interesting interior space in the building. This room is rehabilitated with a low walled body incorporating and recovering the functionality of the stairs and cantilevered upstairs walkway. The old first floor cell doors are left as a reminder of the building’s former role.
